High-Deductible Insurance Plans and Preventive Services

by Berkeley Wellness

If you have a high-deductible health insurance plan, don’t forgo preventive services such as cancer screenings. These are almost always covered at no charge, though many members are unaware of this.

Such plans, which have lower premiums but higher annual deductibles than traditional insurance, are designed to encourage people to reduce unnecessary medical services by making them “have more skin in the game,” but unfortunately members often also cut back on appropriate care, including important preventive services.

This was shown in a research review in Health Affairs in October 2017, which found that, in most studies, people with high-deductible plans significantly reduced their use of important preventive services. “Most proposals to reform the U.S. health care system stress the importance of providing preventive services with no out-of-pocket spending,” the researchers wrote. “With more consumers purchasing such plans, concerted efforts need to be made to educate the public on coverage and benefits.”
