How to Prevent Tick Bites

How to Prevent Tick Bites

by Peter Jaret

If you spend time outdoors in areas where ticks are present, follow these tips to prevent bites that may transmit Lyme disease.

  • Wear light-colored clothing, which makes it easier to see a tick.
  • Tuck your pants into your socks.
  • Apply an insect repellent on exposed skin and your clothes.
  • Check for ticks when you get home. Since they can be tiny and hard to spot, you may need a magnifying glass. Ask someone to check areas you can’t see.
  • Wash and dry clothing you’ve worn outdoors at high temperatures.
  • Check pets for ticks. Pets can pick them up and pass them on to you.
