The Link Between Diabetes and Osteoarthritis

Another reason to take steps to prevent or control type 2 diabetes: People with the condition are at increased risk for osteoarthritis, according to an analysis published in June 2015 in RMD Open, which looked at 49 studies. Obesity increases the risk of both arthritis and diabetes, but even when researchers adjusted for body weight, the asso­ciation between the two diseases persisted in most studies.

High blood sugar may promote joint inflammation and cartilage degradation, the French researchers suggested, among other possible explanations for the link. More research is needed to determine whether suc­cessful treatment of diabetes helps prevent or treat osteoarthritis.
